WHAT ARE CLOTH DIAPERS?

Cloth diapers are diapers that you don't throw away. They are designed to be reused again and again, and are made of super soft fabric rather than plastic which can be found in single-use diapers. Cloth diapers might be called different things, such as 'reusable diapers' or 'washable diapers' but it all means the same thing!

WHY SHOULD I CHOOSE CLOTH DIAPERS?

More and more parents are choosing to use cloth diapers for their baby. Cloth diapers have many benefits:

Bambino Mio 3 Bs infographic showing why to choose to use cloth diapers

Free from nasties

Cloth diapers are better for bums. They are made from super absorbent fabric rather than chemical gels which can be found in other diapers. This may irritate your baby's skin less and can reduce diaper rash.* It's also been known that when ready, your toddler could be potty training up to 6 months earlier than their single-use wearing friends, which can aid their development and independence.**

*Studies have shown that your child is five times more likely to suffer from diaper rash if you use disposable diapers rather than cloth diapers. This is due to the chemicals in disposable diapers evoking the feeling of dryness when in fact your child is wet; meaning you may leave your diaper on longer between changes. Diaper rash can be caused by a number of things such as sickness, teething, and in some instances food allergies or a reaction to baby products such as wipes and creams.

**Studies have shown toddlers who wear cloth diapers are likely to potty train up to 6 months earlier than their disposable wearing friends, which can aid their development and independence.

Save money

Cloth diapers are better for your pocket. You can save up to $1500 when choosing cloth diapers, and even more if you use your diapers with a second child. The bottom line is, even by switching to one cloth diaper a day in place of a single-use diaper, you can make significant financial savings.

Planet friendly

Cloth diapers are better for our planet. 250 million single-use diapers are thrown away across the world every day (that's 90 billion a year!)† Every diaper can take up to 500 years to decompose in landfill.‡ So using cloth diapers can reduce your household plastic waste and your carbon footprint by 40%.§

†Changing disposable diapers: No plastic. No landfill. No waste, Kim Graham-Nye, 18th July 2019.

& super stylish

And they look super cute too. Not much is better than a beautifully designed diaper for the most stylish (and eco-chic) little bottoms.

BUT, ARE CLOTH DIAPERS REALLY BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?

Yes. When washed responsibly and according to our care instructions, cloth diapers are 40% better for the environment. ¶

HOW DO CLOTH DIAPERS WORK?

Cloth diapers work in exactly the same way as any other diaper. The only difference is that when it comes to change-time, you set your diaper aside for laundry day rather than throwing it away. There are some step by step tips we will share with you to help use our products when you start your cloth diaper journey (we're here to help!)

ARE CLOTH DIAPERS EASY TO USE?

Yes. Our diapers are designed to be easy to use (and make change-time extra cute!) They're made with fabrics that will wash efficiently and dry quickly too. You can also choose to use an additional diaper liner to make every diaper change fuss-free.

DO CLOTH DIAPERS WORK AS WELL?

The first thing a diaper has to do is perform and cloth diapers do just that. Cloth diapers use multiple layers of super absorbent fabric for ultimate leak protection. You can experience leaks in every type of diaper, you just need to ensure you have the right fit for your baby.

ARE CLOTH DIAPERS HYGENIC?

Yes. Stored and washed correctly, cloth diapers are as hygenic as any other diaper. To ensure your diapers are as good as new after every wash, click here to follow our laundry guide.

IS THERE LOTS MORE LAUNDRY FOR ME TO DO?

Not lots. Babies come with extra loads of laundry so what's one more wash? Simply pop your diapers into the washing machine and let the machine do the work. Plus, you won't have to empty your garbage as often as there'll be no diapers in there.

DO I HAVE TO USE CLOTH DIAPERS ALL OF THE TIME?

No. Lots of parents use cloth diapers part-time. Usually, this is at home where you can start slow and gradually build up to using full-time when you get into your flow.

ARE CLOTH DIAPERS EXPENSIVE?

Overall, they'll save you money. The initial cost of choosing to reuse can seem expensive, but in the long run you can save over $1500 when using cloth diapers in comparison to single-use diapers. Plus, there are more savings to be had when you use your diapers on another child too.

CAN I HAVE HELP PURCHASING MY DIAPERS?

Yes, there are ways to help with the upfront cost of getting started with cloth diapers:

1. Your local council - Many councils offer incentives, such as money off vouchers, towards cloth diapers. Below are some councils who we currently work with. Please contact your local council to see if there is a cloth diaper incentive scheme in your area.

WHICH DIAPER DO I CHOOSE?

With so many different diaper options available, choosing the right one for your baby can sometimes be confusing. We're here to make it simple. We offer 2 different cloth diapers; miosolo all-in-one diaper and mioduo two-piece diaper. Click here to compare and see which one is right for you.

HOW MANY DIAPERS DO I NEED?

When your baby is young diapers should be regularly checked and changed every 2-4 hours. The number of cloth diapers you need will depend on a few things:

√ Do you intend to use cloth diapers full-time or part-time? Some parents choose to use cloth diapers only when they are at home.

√ How often do you want to wash your diapers? You will need to ensure you have enough diapers to use when your others are in the wash, drying and ready to use again. Normally, diapers are washed every 2 days.

When getting started, we recommend around 8 diapers for part-time use and 16 diapers for full-time use, but it does depend on your planned routine.

WHAT DO I NEED?

What you need depends on whether you are planning to be a full-time or part-time cloth diaper user. When getting started, we recommend you have enough diapers for 2 days worth of diaper changing so you have enough diapers to use while your others are in the wash, drying and are ready to use again. We also recommend choosing somewhere to store dirty diapers before washing. And don't forget, you'll need your washing machine!

BUT, DO I NEED ANYTHING ELSE?

Diapers, diaper storage and a washing machine are the 3 essential things that you need to start using cloth diapers. There are lots of other award-winning products which can help make your cloth diaper journey easier.

  • Diaper liners - Designed to make cloth diaper changing easy and fuss free! Use diaper liners to help keep your baby extra dry and catch solids during change-time. Simply place the liner flat on top of your diaper and change the liner with every diaper change.
  • Laundry treatment - Our in-wash treatment will add a boost to your laundry. Designed to tackle tough stains and odors and keep your diapers naturally white. Just add a dash to your laundry and you're ready to go!

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DIAPER LINERS AND DIAPER INSERTS?

Diaper liners are designed to make diaper changes a little easier by catching poo and helping you to remove it in a mess-free way. Add one liner on top of the diaper and when it's time to change, simply lift off the liner and dispose of the poo down the toilet. Replace with a new liner at every diaper change.

Diaper inserts are designed to add extra absorbency to your diapers. These are especially great for long periods such as overnight or if your baby is a heavy wetter. Before fitting the diaper, insert a booster into the pocket or middle of your nappy.

CAN I USE MY DIAPERS FROM NEWBORN?

Our diapers are suitable for use from newborn, but this is dependent on the size and shape of your baby. Our onesize* diapers are a little larger in size so that they can fit all the way up to potty training. The most appropriate product to use for newborn is an insert + mioduo diaper cover, and then you can move onto another diaper as your baby gets bigger.

*true for most babies but due to a wide range of shapes and sizes this cannot be guaranteed.

CAN I USE MY DIAPERS IN THE MATERNITY WARD?

We recommend confirming your plans with your hospital as they will have their own procedures and rules (just in case). Make sure you have enough diapers for your hospital stay, along with a few storage solutions for your used diapers. Our wet bags are handy to keep used diapers in when away from home, and the bags can easily be taken home to wash diapers and return with fresh ones if your hospital is unable to help you with cleaning solutions.

WHAT DO I DO WHEN I’M OUT AND ABOUT?

Pack your diaper bag with everything you need for your trip out, including enough diapers. When it comes to change-time, simply store your used diapers in your waterproof wet bag or your diaper bag's 'messy' pocket to keep them separate. When you get home, ensure you've separated the poo from your diapers. You can then transfer them into your diaper storage or pop them straight into the washing machine. Simple!

I'M READY FOR POTTY TRAINING, HOW MANY TRAINING PANTS DO I NEED?

How many pairs of training pants you need really depends on your little one. We would recommend around 3-5 pairs of training pants so you can wash them at the end of each day.

Power up for potty training and download your progress chart to help you on your potty training journey.

HOW MANY SWIM DIAPERS DO I NEED?

It's likely you will only need 1 pair of swim diapers for your short time in the pool (however, it's always handy to keep a spare). If going on vacation, we recommend taking around 4 swim diapers so it gives you enough to use throughout the day and rinse overnight for the next day.

Proof of purchase will be required. For full details about our product guarantee see our Terms & Conditions.

HOW DO YOUR POTTY TRAINING PANTS WORK?

Our potty training pants are not designed for full absorption like our diapers, and are designed to help contain little accidents to help make the transition from diapers to big-kid pants. They have a concealed water resistant layer and inner pad that hold small amounts of liquid. This allows your toddler to feel wetness and associate this feeling with needing to use the potty to help aid your potty training journey.

HOW DO YOUR SWIM DIAPERS WORK?

Our swim diapers are designed to catch and contain solids in the water. Just like other swimwear, our swim diapers do not absorb liquids, and are designed to let water out to avoid weighing your baby down in the water. We advise checking with your local swimming pool on their requirements before use.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY PRODUCTS ONCE I NO LONGER USE THEM?

We always encourage reuse of our products where possible. There are lots of ways your diapers can be loved again and again. You can save them if you’re planning on another little arrival, share them with family and friends so they can give cloth a try, donate to your local diaper library who would love extra donations, sell them for some extra cents or repurpose the fabric into something else, like household cleaning cloths

I’VE GOT MY DIAPERS, NOW WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Congratulations, you've take the first step towards using cloth diapers! Now preparation is key. Before you get those super cute diapers onto your baby's bottom you'll need to prewash* your products at least once. This will make them more absorbent and super soft before you start to use them. The more you wash your diapers, the more absorbent they will get. See our laundry guide for instructions on how to wash your nappies

*Take care that you have purchased the correct product as washed diapers cannot be exchanged or refunded.

HOW DO I CHANGE A CLOTH DIAPER?

Remember, diapers should be checked and changed every 2-4 hours, or when a poo has happened just like any diaper. As your baby gets bigger, you may find that you need to change your diaper more frequently.

HOW CAN I MAKE SURE I HAVE THE RIGHT FIT?

Getting the right fit for your baby is important, so make sure you adjust the diaper to suit the shape of your little one. Firstly, ensure you are using the correct size diaper. Then follow the steps below to ensure you get the right fit around the waist and legs.

MY BABY FEELS WET, IS THIS RIGHT?

Yes, your baby will feel a little more wetness than other diapers as there are no chemicals to absorb the moisture. This isn't a bad thing; your baby will not be uncomfortable if you are changing your diaper regularly every 2-4 hours. Reusable diaper liners can be used as an addition to keep your baby extra dry.

WHY ARE MY DIAPERS LEAKING?

Oops! There could be a few simple reasons why your diapers are leaking:

Checklist with points to follow to ensure cloth diapers don't leak

HOW DO I ADD EXTRA ABSORBENCY TO MY DIAPERS?

You may find that you need more absorbency in your diapers. You can add extra inserts to your diaper to maximize performance and build the right level of absorbency for your baby**.

**Ensure our mioboost is used with the label side facing down, away from your baby's skin.

CAN I USE CLOTH DIAPERS OVERNIGHT?

Absolutely! Cloth diapers are great to use when your baby starts sleeping through the night. If you wish to use your diapers at night, you may need to make some adjustments to your daytime diaper to handle the longer hours of sleep. Our mioboost is snooze approved and is the perfect addition to any cloth diaper to maximize absorbency overnight.

HOW SHOULD I STORE MY DIAPERS?

Fresh diapers can be stored however you like! Used diapers can be stored in a laundry bucket or bag before washing. You can store your diapers dry, there's no need to add anything else. You should empty your storage every few days; we recommend storing used diapers for no longer than 3 days.

HOW SHOULD I WASH MY DIAPERS?

When laundry day arrives, lift the laundry bag out of the bucket and transfer into the washing machine. Diapers will wash within the laundry bag so there is no need to handle dirty diapers. Don't overload your washing machine to allow your diapers to wriggle around in the wash and get extra clean.

It's important that you wash all Bambino Mio products in accordance with the washing instructions on the garment label. We recommend washing your diapers up to 140°F with enzyme-free laundry detergent (use as appropriate). Do not use fabric softener when washing, as this can affect the absorbency of your diapers.

We recommend adding 2 heaped tablespoons of laundry treatment to your laundry detergent drawer too. This will add a boost to your laundry and help tackle tough stains and odors†.

†Please note that bright colors may fade over time. Washing regularly at higher temperatures can result in premature deterioration of your diapers.

TOP TIP: Remember to fold back the hook and loop fastenings to protect them in the wash!

Illustrated guide showing 6 steps for washing cloth diapers

WHAT DETERGENT SHOULD I USE?

Your normal laundry detergent will be fine for washing cloth diapers. We recommend selecting a enzyme-free detergent over a enzyme one as they are less likely to irritate the skin. Our enzyme-free baby laundry detergent is free from nasties and is perfect for your little one's delicate skin.

HOW SHOULD I DRY MY DIAPERS?

We recommend air drying your diapers away from direct heat. When hanging diapers, hang by the fabric core insert to avoid any damage to your diapers. Diapers can be tumble dried on a low/cold setting. ‡

‡Frequent tumble drying and contact with direct heat can result in premature deterioration of your nappies.

TOP TIP: If you're using the miosolo all-in-one diaper, pull out the absorbent core from inside the diaper as this will help them dry quicker!

CAN I IRON MY DIAPERS?

No, please don't iron your diapers, as this can affect their performance.

HOW CAN I REMOVE STAINS?

Over time, your diapers may become a little stained and there's nothing wrong with that! There are a few simple ways you can keep your diapers looking as good as new. Using laundry treatment in your diaper wash regularly can help prevent staining on your diapers. Sunlight is also a great natural way to remove stains. Alternatively, you can "strip wash" your diapers once in a while to freshen them up. See below for details about how to strip wash your diapers.

WHAT IS "STRIP WASHING"?

Strip washing is a term you may have come across. Essentially, it means giving your diapers a deep clean. Over time, there may be a build up of laundry detergent in your diapers, which can result in a strong smell and sometimes reduced absorbency. Doing a "strip wash" will restore your diapers to their optimum performance. This is also great for removing stains too§.

§Strip washing diapers too frequently can can result in premature deterioration of your diapers.

HOW DO I STRIP WASH MY DIAPERS?

Simply soak your diapers in a hand hot solution of laundry treatment for at least 2 hours. Use 1-2 heaped tablespoons of laundry treatment for every 4 litres of water. After soaking, wash your diapers in the washing machine as you normally would. We would recommend giving your diapers an additional rinse after your cycle to be sure all the detergent has been removed.

Please note: you must ONLY soak the core of your diapers in this solution, keeping the laminated outer fabric (shell) out of the water. Bambino Mio cannot be responsible for any deterioration to the products after incorrect soaking.

HOW DO I GET INTO A ROUTINE?

Don't worry if things start a little shaky. You'll find your flow and we're here to help you through your cloth diaper journey. Follow our essential STEPS TO SUCCESS guide to help you get into your cloth diaper routine.
